But when the fulfillment of the time came, God sent his Son, born through a woman, and born under the Law. This was so he could redeem those under the Law so that we could be adopted. Galatians 4:4-5 CEB
Adoption is a wonderful thing, except when it isn’t, like the person I met on Sunday named, Gena.
She was adopted by her step-father. It turns out that her mother drilled it in her head that her birth father abandoned her, and when she found him years later, so many lies were discovered. God’s love, Gena said to me, was not like how people love.
When God talks about adoption, His love is absolutely perfect. He won’t abandon you, play games with your head, or leave you in the cold. What disobedience in the Garden of Eden caused, God redeemed through Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection.
Gena has a great attitude these days. She serves in the Soup Kitchen in town and often tells people her church has adopted her and become her family. Someone was spreading a graphic on my Facebook where it said, “Too many Christians use the church, but don’t love it. (Rick Warren)” And all I could think of was Gena and how much she loves and serves in church because of what the body has done.
Don’t expect perfect in church. You’ll be hurt and disappointed. Just accept the imperfection and gravitate towards the loving ones who are taking the time to get to know YOU. What family has ever been perfect?
